My contact list has been used yesterday evening to send this "Dear
friend" e-mail (se below). I've changed my password for google this
morning, but I would still like to now the source to my trouble.
Can this be related to a facebook "competition app" ?
Do you have other recommendations?
Best regards

1. Check whether the sent copy of this message is in your Sent or
Trash. If it is, changing your password is a good option.
2. If not, your email address has simply been spoofed to spam others,
a common phenomenon.
3. If the spam has gone to *all* or *most* contacts in your contact
list, then either
a. you are using a desktop email client, and your system is infected,
or
b. these contacts, along with you, are in some public group or fora
with publicly accessible addresses
4. If the spam has been received by just one or two of your contacts,
it is either
a. a simple coincidence (or 3b), or
b. just another spam 'doing the rounds' of your network or across the
globe
Ensure that neither you, nor any contacts you know, click any links in
such spam messages, nor reply, or try to flame the spammer's address
in any way, even using third-party tools or services.

I've also had this same issue recently. A message was apparently sent
from her email address to every single entry in her contacts,
including one for each of multiple email entries for individuals.
After some research, I'm still a little perplexed as to what could
have occurred. It seemed particularly strange that I found very few
other reports of this (though varied text in the message could make it
hard to track).
I've done extensive scanning for viruses with multiple programs. The
only things found were the following: SPYWARE_TRAK_WINTECTIVE and
ADW_TRYMEDIA.AB. It's possible that the first could have resulted in
the compromising of my wife's gmail account, but they both seem to be
relatively low risk.
The text of the aforementioned message follows:

As far as neutralizing any further threat, I've changed all passwords,
ceased having browsers remember passwords, and as mentioned before
I've scanned our laptop extensively.
If anyone has suggestions or information regarding this incident, they
would be greatly appreciated.
Sadly enough, this happenned to me too this morning.
I did change my password and scanned the whole computer and found
nothing...I'm kind of puzzled but this issue.
I'm pasting here the mails content for further reference and I'm
hoping to sort it out quickly.
