About CLARA
The Canadian Ladies Amateur Radio Association has over 40 years of continuous operation on the air.

How CLARA Started

The birth of a national YL club came about as a Centennial project of the Ontario Trilliums at their fall meeting in 1967. It was with mixed emotions that the final decision was made. Next thing to be concerned about was a name. To start, we were all thinking along the lines of the American YLRL which stands for Young Ladies Radio League. Another YL and myself came up with a name between us and we started laughing. We were asked to present it. We suggested the name Canadian Amateur Ladies League and we could be known as the CALL girls of Canada, but for some reason we were voted down. After that decision the thought of any kind of Ladies League was shot down and after much thought and jotting down of letters the name Canadian Ladies Amateur Radio Association was chosen. What could be more appropriate. CLARA, an acronym for Canadian Ladies Amateur Radio Association. It said what it was. A YL name for a YL Association. Much planning was put into the formation of this club. Chris Weeks VE1AKO was chosen as the first president. The Ontario Trilliums and the Maritime Sparkettes donated money to get CLARA financially on it’s feet.

Prior to 1967 the Maritime Sparkettes and the Ontario Trilliums were the only YL amateur radio associations in Canada. CLARA was formed with input from the members of these two associations, which eventually disbanded.

Present at the meeting on September 17, 1967 when CLARA was formed were:

Jean VE3DGG, Betty VE3ASZ, Cathy VE3GJH, Doree VE3EUV, Bonny VE3GSW, Shirley VE3GNG, Doreen VE3FUR, Audrey VE3CCO, Doris VE3BBO, Thelma VE3CLT, Myrtle VE3FMX and visitors June Sanders and Doreen Titmarsh.
